International Surplus Inventory Manager
Are you a commercially driven international trade professional who knows how to find opportunities where others see surplus inventory? Do you have a strong track record of closing cross-border deals, building buyer networks and recovering value from surplus or end-of-life inventory? And do you combine an entrepreneurial mindset with a strong understanding of regulatory and export requirements?
At Mediq, we are looking for an International Surplus Inventory Manager to build and run a dedicated international sales channel for excess and risk inventory across our European markets.
This is a hands-on commercial role. You find the buyer, negotiate the deal and get the stock sold. Your success is measured by value recovered, write-offs avoided and inventory reduced—not by the number of activities performed.
You will be part of Mediq Group, hosted within Mediq Netherlands B2B, Export and Trade, and report to the Head of B2B Netherlands, Export and Trade. You will also work closely with the Head of S&OP Group on the Group excess and risk stock portfolio.
Your impact at Mediq
Mediq distributes medical devices and consumables across 14 European countries. In a tender-driven and product-launch-heavy environment, excess and risk inventory can arise: products for which demand changes, items that are replaced or delisted, or inventory originally built for tenders and launches that develop differently than expected.
As International Surplus Inventory Manager, you focus on the material inventory positions across our markets where a dedicated international commercial approach can recover value that cannot be realized through the regular sales organization.
You are the commercial arm of our Group excess and risk stock process. Markets and S&OP identify the stock; you turn it into a deal. You find buyers, determine the right route to market, negotiate within the agreed mandate and execute the transaction.
The objective is straightforward: recover as much value as possible, release working capital and warehouse capacity and reduce write-offs—while always protecting Mediq’s compliance standards, existing markets and reputation.
What will you do?
You will develop and run an international sales strategy specifically for Mediq’s excess and risk inventory. This requires creativity, commercial instinct and the persistence to identify buyers and routes to market that may not yet exist within Mediq.
Your key responsibilities include:
- Developing and running the international sales strategy for excess and risk inventory.
- Building a qualified international buyer network across distributors, traders, brokers, NGOs, humanitarian buyers, emerging markets, auctions and other relevant channels.
- Proactively identifying new geographies and routes to market for medical devices and consumables.
- Selling primarily outside Mediq’s operating markets to protect our existing commercial channels and market pricing.
- Using the Group excess and risk stock list as your commercial deal pipeline and prioritizing the positions where the greatest value can be recovered.
- Taking listed inventory through the appropriate route: sale, supplier return, discounted sale or donation, with scrapping as the final option.
- Setting and executing pricing strategies for surplus inventory, including discounting, bundling and auctions, within agreed pricing mandates and approval thresholds.
- Personally negotiating pricing, delivery terms, Incoterms and payment security with international buyers.
- Preparing clear commercial decision cases when a potential deal falls outside agreed thresholds.
- Working with markets, Finance, Supply Chain and S&OP to ensure eligible inventory is identified and commercial opportunities are acted upon quickly.
- Reporting on your pipeline, revenue, recovered value, margin, write-offs avoided, lead times and open risks.
- Feeding recurring causes of excess inventory back into S&OP and Sourcing so that lessons from trading can also help prevent excess inventory from rebuilding.
Commercial freedom within clear boundaries
International trading in medical devices requires commercial creativity, but also discipline.
Every transaction must comply with applicable requirements concerning MDR/IVDR, GDP, shelf life, labelling and UDI, export controls, sanctions and supplier or manufacturer distribution restrictions.
You also actively prevent channel conflict, parallel trade and grey-market return flows into Mediq’s existing markets. You work closely with Quality & Regulatory Assurance and Regulatory Affairs to ensure the appropriate release, documentation and product-specific requirements are in place.
For compliance breaches, there is zero tolerance.
What do you bring?
You are commercially driven and energized by finding buyers, creating new routes to market and closing deals. You do not wait for opportunities to arise: you actively create them.
At the same time, you understand that the best deal is not always the one with the highest price. You consider book value, provisions, alternative disposal costs, compliance requirements and the potential impact on existing Mediq markets when determining the right commercial route.
We are looking for someone who brings:
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree, preferably in Commercial Economics, Business Administration, International Trade or a related field.
- Between five and ten years of international B2B sales or trading experience, with a demonstrable track record of personally closing cross-border deals.
- Experience with medical devices, medical consumables or pharmaceutical distribution is a strong advantage.
- Experience with liquidation, secondary markets, surplus inventory, excess trading or distressed inventory is preferred.
- Working knowledge of MDR/IVDR, GDP, export controls and sanctions requirements relevant to international medical-device sales.
- Strong commercial and negotiation skills and the confidence to operate within an agreed pricing mandate.
- Strong commercial analytical skills, including the ability to assess pricing against book value, provision levels and alternative disposal costs.
- Confidence working with detailed inventory data in Excel or BI tools.
- An existing buyer network within emerging markets, international trade channels or NGOs is an advantage.
- English at C1 professional level; Dutch, German or a Nordic language would be an advantage but is not required.
- Willingness to travel internationally for buyer meetings, trade fairs and alignment with our markets.
What makes you successful?
You are a hunter rather than a farmer. You measure your success by the value you recover and the deals you close, rather than by activity alone.
You are creative in finding routes to market and comfortable testing new channels, geographies, bundles, auctions and other commercial solutions. You understand the value of the inventory you are selling and take personal ownership of the recovery result.
You also know where commercial entrepreneurship ends. You never compromise compliance or Mediq’s reputation for a deal and are prepared to walk away from a buyer when the destination, use or transaction cannot be sufficiently verified.
Success means turning excess inventory into documented outcomes: sold, returned, donated or, when no viable alternative exists, disposed of—rather than allowing inventory positions to remain unresolved.
Why join Mediq?
This is an unusual commercial opportunity within an international healthcare organization. Rather than taking over an established sales territory, you will build a dedicated international route to market and have considerable freedom to identify where and how value can be recovered.
You will:
- Operate across all Mediq markets with a Group-wide commercial mandate.
- Build an international buyer network and develop new sales channels.
- Personally own and close cross-border transactions.
- Work closely with senior stakeholders across Sales, S&OP, Finance, Supply Chain, Sourcing and Quality & Regulatory.
- Have a directly measurable impact on recovered value, working capital and avoided write-offs.
- Combine entrepreneurship and international trading with the purpose and responsibility of working within healthcare.
