Are you an international trader who knows how to find a buyer for stock that others have given up on? Do you have a track record of personally closing cross-border deals, and a buyer network you can pick up the phone to today? And do you combine that with the discipline that selling medical devices across borders requires?
At Mediq, we are looking for an International Trader to build and run a dedicated international sales channel for our excess and surplus inventory across our European markets. This is a new role with a Group mandate. You will not inherit a territory, you will build a route to market that does not exist at Mediq yet.
This is a hands-on commercial role. You find the buyer, negotiate the deal and get the stock sold. You are measured on the value you recover and the deals you close, not on activity. You will be part of Mediq Group, hosted within Mediq Netherlands B2B, Export and Trade, reporting to the Head of B2B Netherlands, Export and Trade, and working closely with the Head of S&OP Group on the Group stock portfolio.
The role is offered on a fixed-term or contract basis for a minimum of 12 months with evaluation for continuation, and it carries a performance-based component linked to the value you recover.
Your impact at Mediq
Mediq distributes medical devices and consumables across 13 European countries. In a tender-driven and launch-heavy market, excess inventory is part of the business: demand shifts, products are replaced or delisted, and stock built for a tender or a launch does not always move as planned.
As International Trader, you take on the material positions across our markets where a dedicated international commercial effort can recover value that the regular sales organization cannot. You are the commercial arm of the Group stock process: the markets and S&OP identify and list the stock, you turn it into a deal. You find the buyer, choose the route to market, negotiate within your mandate and execute the transaction.
The objective is straightforward: recover as much value as possible, release working capital and warehouse capacity, and do it without disturbing our existing markets or compromising our compliance standards.
What will you do?
You will develop and run an international sales strategy for stock that the regular commercial organization cannot move. This takes commercial instinct, creativity and the persistence to find buyers and routes that are not on the map yet.
Your key responsibilities include:
- Building and running the international sales strategy for Mediq's excess and surplus inventory
- Building a qualified international buyer network across distributors, traders, brokers, NGOs and humanitarian buyers, emerging markets, auction platforms and other relevant channels
- Proactively opening new geographies and routes to market for medical devices and consumables
- Selling primarily outside Mediq's operating markets, so that our existing commercial channels and market pricing stay protected
- Working the Group stock list as your commercial deal pipeline and prioritizing the positions where the most value can be recovered
- Choosing and executing the right route for each position: direct sale, bundled sale, auction, supplier return or donation
- Setting and executing pricing for surplus stock, including discounting and bundling, within an agreed mandate and approval thresholds
- Personally negotiating price, delivery terms, Incoterms and payment security with international buyers
- Preparing a clear commercial case when a deal falls outside your mandate, so decisions are made quickly
- Working with our markets, Sales, Supply Chain, S&OP, Sourcing and Finance so that eligible stock is listed and opportunities are acted on fast
- Reporting monthly on pipeline, revenue, value recovered, margin, lead time and open risks
- Feeding the recurring causes of excess stock back into S&OP and Sourcing, so that what you learn in the market helps prevent the problem from rebuilding
Commercial freedom within clear boundaries
International trading in medical devices takes creativity, and it takes discipline. Every transaction has to meet the applicable requirements on MDR/IVDR, GDP, shelf life, labeling and UDI, export controls, sanctions, and supplier or manufacturer distribution restrictions.
You actively prevent channel conflict, parallel trade and grey-market return flows into Mediq's own markets, through buyer vetting, destination clauses and contractual resale restrictions. You work closely with Quality and Regulatory Assurance and Regulatory Affairs on release, documentation and product-specific requirements. On compliance, there is zero tolerance.
What do you bring?
You are commercially driven and you get energy from finding a buyer, opening a channel and closing a deal. You do not wait for opportunities, you create them. At the same time you understand that the highest price is not always the best deal: you weigh what the position is worth, what the alternatives cost, what compliance requires and what the transaction could mean for Mediq's own markets.
We are looking for someone who brings:
- A bachelor's or master's degree, preferably in commercial economics, business administration, international trade or a related field
- Five to ten years of international B2B sales, export or trading experience, with a demonstrable track record of personally closing cross-border deals
- Experience with medical devices, medical consumables or pharmaceutical distribution, which is a strong advantage
- Experience with secondary markets, surplus or overstock trading, liquidation or distressed inventory, which is preferred
- Working knowledge of MDR/IVDR, GDP, export control and sanctions requirements as they apply to international medical-device sales
- Strong commercial and negotiation skills, and the confidence to operate within an agreed pricing mandate
- Strong commercial analytics: you can judge a price against what the position is worth and what the alternatives would cost
- Confidence working with item-level data in Excel or BI tools
- An existing buyer network in emerging markets, international trade channels or NGOs, which is an advantage
- English at C1 professional level. Dutch, German or a Nordic language is helpful but not required
- Willingness to travel internationally for buyer meetings, trade fairs and alignment with our markets
What makes you successful?
You are a hunter rather than a farmer. Deal cycles here are short and our markets need answers in days, not weeks, so you move fast and you keep your pipeline honest.
You are creative about routes to market and comfortable testing new channels, geographies, bundles and auction formats. You take personal ownership of the recovery result rather than handing the problem back.
You also know where commercial entrepreneurship ends. You never trade Mediq's compliance or reputation for a deal, and you are prepared to walk away from a buyer when the destination, the use or the transaction cannot be properly verified.
What does Mediq offer?
This is an unusual commercial opportunity inside an international healthcare company. Rather than taking over an established territory, you build a route to market from scratch and have real freedom in deciding where and how value gets recovered.
You can expect:
- A Group-wide commercial mandate across all Mediq markets
- The freedom to build your own international buyer network and open new sales channels
- Full ownership of your deals, from first contact to execution
- A performance-based component linked to the value you recover
- Direct access to senior stakeholders across Sales, S&OP, Finance, Supply Chain, Sourcing and Quality and Regulatory, with the Chief Supply Chain Officer as program sponsor
- A directly measurable impact on working capital and commercial results
- An international working environment, with hybrid working and the flexibility that comes with a Group role
